SRBR provided innovative MEP designs for an array of community facilities, many of them included combinations of community centers and bath houses for outdoor community pools. The following are some of SRBR’s recreational facility projects in Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky:

RECREATIONAL CENTERS

Peppermill Community Center, Landover, Maryland
SRBR collaborated with a prominent local architect and general contractor on this 15,000-square-foot Community Center located in Landover, Maryland. This project was a design-build project for Prince George’s County that included a gymnasium, fitness room, (2) multipurpose rooms, meeting room and a pantry. SRBR designed the HVAC, electrical, lighting and plumbing for this single-story building. The design process included multiple presentations with the county and enhanced commissioning by a third party.

Merritt Athletic Club
SRBR teamed with Merritt Properties and a local architect to design a unique seasonal snack/shack and bar to be placed outside by the pool deck. This project re-purposed a shipping container into a snack shack/bar. SRBR designed the plumbing and kitchen ventilation along with power and lighting. We
collaborated with a European company who will construct the building and ship it to the site pre-plumbed and wired.

Bally’s Total Fitness Centers, US and Canada
SRBR was retained as the club’s mechanical/electrical engineer for a seven-year period and has completed designs for more than 15 separate facilities in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, and Toronto, Canada. Projects included renovations of existing clubs, adaptation of second use buildings, and new facilities. Bally’s facilities include aerobic rooms, weight training areas, cardio equipment, indoor track, and in some facilities, indoor pools. 

West Columbia Recreation Center, Columbia, Maryland
The building consists of a large indoor swimming pool, two independent gymnasiums, several aerobic rooms, game rooms, locker and shower facilities and administration spaces for a total area of 56,000 square feet. SRBR’s design included humidity control in the pool areas with recycling of the water recovered during dehumidification. An atrium was included in the design that required smoke control and exhaust to meet the building code. An on-site emergency generator was included to provide power to life safety equipment during utility interruptions.  

Columbia Association, Columbia, Maryland
SRBR was the engineer of record for remedial work on several pool house projects managed by the Columbia Association, to include the following community centers:

• Locust Point (Feasibility Study) 
• Columbia Swim Center (Interior & Systemic Renovation)

Piney Orchard Community Center, Anne Arundel County, Maryland 
This project involved designing the second outdoor pool, outdoor bathhouse with pool equipment room, and exterior pool deck lighting to compliment new exterior elements. Additional work included correction of ventilation and remodeling of the community center men and women’s locker rooms.

West Columbia Recreation Center, Columbia, Maryland 
60,000 Square feet, 3-story facility with aerobics classrooms, weight training, multiple indoor basketball courts and an indoor swimming pool. SRBR designed the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems for this facility, including indoor and exterior lighting, the pool ventilation systems and low voltage systems.
Boys and Girls Club, Mashpee, MA
9600 Square foot gymnasium and recreation center, consisting of indoor basketball gym, game room, kitchen facilities and administrative space. SRBR designed the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems for this facility, including indoor and exterior lighting, the kitchen ventilation systems and low voltage systems. 

Mount De Sales Academy Gymnasium - Catonsville, MD 
This facility was constructed in 1998 for a private girl’s school. The building consisted of a multi-purpose gym, team locker/shower areas, and support offices. SRBR provided mechanical system design included provisions for future air conditioning for special event activities in the gymnasium.

North Oaks Community Center, Timonium, Maryland
North Oaks is a 10,000-square foot, 2-story building for an elderly community. The building includes meeting spaces, exercise room, card room, toilet/shower facilities for an outdoor pool and tennis courts. SRBR designed the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems for this facility, including indoor and exterior lighting, the pool plumbing systems and low voltage systems. 

Chimes Community Center, Baltimore, Maryland
This project consisted of a 15,000-square foot single-story slab on grade community center and day care facility for the physically and mentally handicapped. Facility includes classrooms, multi-purpose space and administration offices. SRBR designed the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems for this facility, including indoor and exterior lighting, and low voltage systems.

Greenmont Senior Center (Korean Senior Center) - Baltimore, MD 
SRBR planned and designed the renovation work for this aging 2-story, 15,000-square foot school building to a community center for use as a Korean senior center. Building layout included multi-purpose space with removable partitions, catering warming kitchen and administration space. The second floor of the facility was designed as a shell space with future elevator provisions for fit-out.
